Albums of The Year: 2006

Curious what others think on this. And feel free to make your own categories. My definite favorite of the year is Beirut's "Gulag Orkestar": AKA the Slavic Opus of a 19-year hig school drop out from Albuquerque. My vote for worst album is another easy one: Fergie's "The Dutchess". And I'd give "Whatever People Say I Am I'm Not" by The Arctic Monkeys the most overrated title.

I'll start out with my choice of most over-rated album of the year, or at least this past month: Joanna Newsom's 'Ys'.
That voice - the voice that could sink a 1000 ships, I just CANNOT get past it. And the lyrics just sound so freakin' pretentious... as if she'd receive a special licensce to bjork...
And let's face it - if she was a 300 pound 43 year old with facial warts, would she get near the amount of attention or adoration she's receiving now? No way...

I like the Arctic Monkey album... but yes, the hype was so over the top it would make anyone sick.

I agree on the Joanna Newsome comment... she is so popular she could fart out a record and it would get tons of great press.

well sadly I am totally over my head in this conversation... again. Honestly, my volume of music purchased has increased, but it has all been by single song purchase on iTUNES. I don't remember the last CD I bought. How sad. I did ask for the Thomas Crown Affair Soundtrack for Christmas though!

But I will say I HATE HATE HATE fergie, so I must assume your other recommendations are worthy. Have you seen the Bowling for Soup version on yahoo music = you should definitely give that one a look. funny.

What else came out this year? I'm totally spoiled by the bf just loading muzak on my iPOD, that I don't keep track of releases. I'm not sure what came out this year...This much I do know, last year was a very good year for new music.

Love Beirut and he wins my vote since I can't remember anything else that came this year. Oh, just thought of one--Band of Horses. That was a pretty decent album.

Okay, just looked on Pitchfork Media--which gave Y's a 9.4. Barf--Writer's Block, by Peter Bjorn and John came out this year. Thought that was a damn fine album (thanks bf). I'm torn.

If it matters, CDX, you'd severly dislike Writer's Block.

Wouldn't the worst album of the year be by K-Fed or Paris Hilton? Not that I have heard either, but you kinda don't need to...

Joanna Newsom's album is not only the most overrated album of the year, but certainly the decade. The new Clipse album, Hell Hath No Fury, actually has me listening to rap for the first time in a shnizzle bizzizzle years. "Give up the cash before I turns you cookie-monster blue.."

Other stand outs include Swan Lake, Tim Hecker, Grizzly Bear, Sunset Rubdown, yes... Beirut, Xiu Xiu, and the ATL's own Snowden.

Craigeoke- back from the dead! I thought I was going to have to woo you back with an Atlanta Hawks entry or something.

Thanks for the list everyone. This is definitely giving me some music to go try out (although I will skip Writer's Block per your advice EMHO). But seriously, has anyone heard K-Fed album? Can we really say it's so bad? Maybe it really is a work of genius

I'm with Darci, you've gone way over my head - I've never ever heard of half these folks but definitely something for me to investigate! My favourite album this year was James Morrison "Undiscovered" although I don't know if it's out in the States yet. The worst album has to be Fergie. Haven't heard it, just hate everything off of it. I hate Paris and K-Fed too but their lack of sales and the stating of the obvious keeps Fergie at #1.

Alright- went to iTunes and listened to KFed, and Fergie is way worse. KFed's was mediocre, not good, not bad, mostly boring. But Fergie? Especially Fergilicious with that weird video game echo and great lines like, "I'm the F to the E, R, G the I the E/And can't no other lady put it down like me"

Fergilicious

I know people love Thom Yorke and Radiohead, but I just don't get it. Such a one trick pony. Why release a solo album that sounds exactly like your band?
